5 Communication Skills You should understand and taken care of.

Communication is one of the very important quality a person should have to be successful in their personal or professional life. Many persons fail just because they cannot communicate well, even if they are very good in theoretical or academic knowledge.

There are hundreds of different communication skills a person need to possess, but here we will focus on important five. These are very important for a person to be a social animal, let it be in his work place or in private space.

Let us try to understand one by one.

1. Listening

One of the most important problem faced by many persons they will never listen to any body. They will simply try to make their point without understanding the real ground. Listening is one of the most important aspects of communication. Successful listening is not just and understanding of spoken or written information, but also an understanding of how the speaker feels during communication. If we are not able to understand the intention or expectation of the speaker, then the entire discussion will become futile. More over an attentive listening will increase the confidence of the speaker to explain all aspects as well will create a stronger, long lasting relationship.

Another point worth noting is, if we are not doing a careful listening, we may misunderstand what the speaker is expressing, he may be trying to explain his inability or the negative side of the project, but we may not understand properly as we are doing passive listening. That will create problems later.

So it is true that listening is not just hearing, but understanding the speaker in his/her way as both of them can later work together for long term and avoid taking accidental decisions.

2. Straight talking

Many of the people at present, I care myself, attitude people. Very less number of persons grab every opportunities to get introduced to any body. One of the important aspect of personal and professional success is the person should be communicable.

So conversation is the basis of communication and we should give proper importance to that. Even a piece of non verbal communication can create an image of yourselves in the mind of other person and can become an opportunity.

In professional life also an accessible and communicable person can create magics in confidence building and team work. It will create mutual trust and help to detect problems well early.

Even strangers can be influenced by the a small dose of chatting and that influence may be developed as a long term relationship. So the most important thing is be accessible and friendly.

3. Non-verbal communication

Most of us believe that the language makes the difference and many of us usually complains that we are weak in English. Your verbal communication can have influential power of less than 7%, the remaining balance power is with your non verbal communication.

Whenever we discuss with anybody we speak in a language, but our body and actions and situations send lot of nonverbal messages. Like your body language, tone, eye contact, the way in which you dressed up, the place where you are meeting, the listening or speaking style, breathing, the gestures and much more.

The way you look, listen, create, react, gesture, speaks far more about feelings than words will ever be able to express.

Developing he ability to use understand the emotions of others and use nonverbal communication signals properly will help anybody to connect with anybody and influence them. This will help you to make the listener understand the way in which you are thinking and help you to connect better with them and have a long lasting, successful relationship.

4. Stress management

There is a proverb, even if a product is lifesaving one , heavy consumption can lead to dangers. The same way, most of the psychologist say that stress in small quantity is very good for the growth and success of a person. A small amount of stress can increase focus, success rate, reduce mistakes and achieve targets.

But the problems starts when the stress become continuous and cannot handle. At this point the stress will start control a person and his decisions. It will lead to numerous problems like, lack of focus, energy, vision, clarity of decision, direction of decisions etc. when a person is in stress, he will start sending negative nonverbal signals, unknowingly.

It can make a very successful person a laughing stock in front of others. So to continue with your success pattern and improve it , it is very important to control and improve stress management skills, to not to regret in future.

5. Emotion control

One of the very important aspect of anybody’s character is their emotional stability. Feelings have a very important role to play in their success. A proper decision making is also affected with the emotions at which you are taking decisions.

We have seen in many real life situations, even most successful person commit mistakes just because they are not able to control their emotions.

If you are not able to evaluate and control the negative aspect of your emotions, it can affect your skills and your success.

This can result in frustration, misunderstanding and conflict. A proper understanding and control of emotions help you to react according to situations and thus control the situations.

Above mentioned aspects are considered very important but not exclusive, there are many other aspects to communication skills which can have positive an negative impact to communication. We will discuss about them in a later occasion.
